A beautiful property and grounds.

The owner has managed to maintain the historic ambience whilst simultaneously creating a modern and comfortable home away from home.

The personal touches really add to this character, family photos, filled bookshelves, candles and ornaments.

A high point was the fascinating tour around the villa, given by the owner herself, again adding to the homely atmosphere. It was very informative and gave the history of the villa over the centuries.

The food provided was absolutely delicious, and the 'pizza night' was also a wonderful idea. Different dietary needs were taken into consideration on all the food provided.

I would absolutely recommend the property to a friend, and would definitely return myself.

Loved the whole experience. The villa's owner Marina and her staff were amazing and I felt like I was staying with friends. The villa itself was lovely and had so much character. The accommodation was clean and fresh and the bed super comfortable. The food was delicious, fresh and authentic. I would definitely recommend this villa to my family and friends and I look forward to returning one day soon for more of the hosts hospitality.

Stunning property

This is a beautiful place to stay, an elegant and charming home. The owner and housekeeper go out of their way to make you feel welcome and comfortable. The Villa has a wealth of original features going back to the Romans and a fascinating history. A short walk across the road brings you to a delightful restaurant with food and wine of the highest quality.  Yes, I would definitely recommend this property to my family and friends.

Mark and Jessica, December 2015

My family of 16 people rented Villa il Cardinale from December 16-26.  My (now) wife and I decided to get married in Rome and needed to find a place that could accommodate our families.  Let me just say that, without a doubt, staying at this Villa was one of the best decisions of our lives.

The Villa's owner, Marina, is courtesy, responsive, and flexible.  She was ever-patient as she dealt with the evolving needs of my 16 family members, including my 85 year old grandmother who had never traveled outside the United States, and the "no-fail" requirements associated with wedding events.  She assisted us in arranging transport from the airport (at a very good price), worked with a local restaurant to arrange and cater my wedding's rehearsal dinner for more than 40 people (a pre-wedding night tradition in the United States, where we are from) and Christmas lunch, and set us up for a "pizza night" which included homemade pizzas made in the Villa's on-site wood-burning oven.

The Villa itself as immaculate as it is historical.  Each family member had the sanctuary of his own hotel room while also having beautiful indoor and outdoor areas in which to congregate, prepare meals, drink wine, and sit by the fireplace.  Despite our large numbers, we each had an abundance of hot water--which is unusual for Rome!  As I was getting married in Rome, my wife and I had the Cardinale suite--let me tell you, it was a dream with its size, fireplace, and private balcony.  But that was only one of five total fireplaces, which we definitely put to good use.

Marina's on-site staff were equally wonderful.  My family fell in love with the housekeeper (Stefania) and groundskeeper (Francesco), who despite their limited English, worked hard to ensure everyone was happy and our needs were addressed promptly.

Although a rental car is a must, the train stations (along with a major shopping mall, grocery stores, and almost everything else one may need) are all within a ten minute drive.  We frequently car-pooled to the Settebagni train station, parked, and took the 20-minute train to Piazziale Flaminio, where we could catch a cab or metro to where we needed to go in Rome.

I spent about two years living in Rome and have visited this magical city many times.  This trip was by far my best experience--all made possible by our stay at the Villa.  There is no way our family would have had this great experience if we rented hotel rooms.  Our stay at the Villa was amazing.  If you are considering this option, you will not be disappointed.  If you have questions about this Villa, please do not hesitate to contact me through the owner and I would be happy to discuss our experience in person.

If you are visiting Rome with a large group, there is not a better place to stay.

Exceeded every expectation!
12 July 2015

The Villa Il Cardinale exceeded our expectations! Our family of 15 stayed in the Villa Il Cardinale from July 12th – July 15th, 2015. The villa was the perfect place for our family to be together before a Mediterranean cruise. From the moment we expressed interest in the home, the owner, Marina Wallace, provided assistance for our every need with timely feedback! Without a doubt, the Villa surpassed our expectations for our lovely holiday! Marina and her housekeeper, Stefania, were exceptionally accommodating! From assisting with all of our transportation needs to buying groceries before our arrival and helping with a family medical emergency during our visit, we had friends to assist us while we were in Rome! During our stay, our family relaxed in the spacious outside patio area with umbrellas, comfortable seating and utilized the ping-pong table for added entertainment! The bedrooms were very comfortable and beautifully decorated; there were plenty of restrooms; and the common areas were quite spacious and able to accommodate all of us after a long day of touring. It’s hard to explain, but the property is truly a wonderful combination of regal splendor and homey comfort. When you stay, be sure to request a pizza night! Pizza was prepared and cooked in the wood burning pizza oven on site by authentic pizza chef’s, Francesco and Lannie! Each person selected their toppings and had a pizza created and baked to delicious perfection just for them, 20 feet from 1st century ruins! Combined with some amazing local spirits, this was a night our family will not soon forget! Marina not only shared her home with us but she shared the archaeological information about the pristine ancient ruins on the property, and she shared the personal significance the property had to her family; truly beautiful. Finally, cannot leave out the incredible The Bel Poggio Restaurant, located just across the street from the Villa. A hidden gem, we had a delicious Italian dinner, reminiscent of my grandmothers cooking. Exceptional food, very attentive and gracious service and all within walking distance! All in all, our stay was spectacular and if we are ever fortunate enough to travel to Rome again, we will absolutely return to Villa il Cardinale.

We were a family of 15 on our 50th anniversary and stayed at the beautiful Villa Il Cardinale. If you are looking for a gorgeous villa which is immaculately clean, modern with all conveniences, and with loads of Roman history, this is the villa for you. The villa was spacious with bedrooms and bathrooms for everyone. We especially loved the master bedroom with the largest king size bed you have ever seen. It is the size of two king size beds. The entire villa is homey and has everything you would want or need. The rooms are spacious, beautiful antiques everywhere and everything beautifully decorated. If you are looking for luxury and modern, this is the villa for you. The villa is beautifully maintained, gorgeous gardens, and most of all the beautiful Roman artifacts everywhere. Marina, the owner does not live on the property, but was always available by email or phone to take care of our questions. She was accommodating and always available. A special thank you to Stefania, Marina's villa caretaker who greeted us when we arrived and toured the villa with us and explained restaurants, the pool, and places of interest. She was very friendly and also answered our questions. We had our privacy and it was comforting to know that she was close by if we needed her. The restaurants which are close by, the Bel Poggio and the Nashville are within walking distance, and are quite good. The pool at the country club is beautiful and costs only a few euros to use. The villa has so much fascinating history you won't want to miss. If you are looking for a very large, spacious, beautiful gardens and grounds, lots of Roman history, and a wonderful owner and caretaker, this is the villa for you. It is full of beauty and artifacts and a glorious vacation you will never forget. I can't say enough about Villa Il Cardinale. Thank you Marina for allowing us the pleasure of staying at your beautiful villa.

I spent a magical week at this villa on a yoga retreat. The house and gardens are beautiful and its historical importance fascinating. More importantly I could not have had a warmer welcome , all my needs anticipated and both the owner and her houskeeper could not have been more helpful and friendly. There was a lovely tranquil room in which to do our yoga practice with everything we could need including an impressive collection of books. The city center was easy to get to, with the added pleasure of returning to the peace of the villa at the end of the day. I've been recommending this villa to friends and family and even to my yoga teacher.

Family Reunion for 18!

Date of Stay
02 April 2015

Our family just returned from a fabulous gathering in Rome. It wasn't easy finding the perfect place for all of us - 14 adults and 4 children, but Villa di Cardinale was a great find. Marina was so easy to work with and was incredibly accommodating. We had a set of 10 month-old twins with us, a 2-year old and a 4-year old. We fitted very nicely in the villa and cottage and Marina and Stefania organized the extra cots/cribs and high chairs we needed for the kids. They went the extra mile to have everything all set for us and it was so nice to just move in and take over this amazing villa. We were welcomed, shown around and given the keys and left alone to enjoy this beautiful place. It was easy to get into the center of Rome, but you will definitely need a car while staying at the villa. There isn't a little village to walk to, but there is an amazing restaurant right across the street and a grocery store about 5 mins drive where we went a lot! We enjoyed cooking dinners together at the villa - the kitchen was well stocked with plenty of dishes and cookware. All the comforts of home!

Excellent business trip

Date of Stay
20 February 2015

Our company from Saint-Petersburg had an annual event of shareholders at the elegant Villa Cardinale. It was an enjoyable experience of mixing a business trip with the stay at the relaxing atmosphere of historic Roman villa away from the noise of a big city. The villa is great, very comfortable and cosy, there is everything you may need. Suite Il Cardinale bedroom is ravishing, all rooms are different but very comfortable. Our guests used a TV for presentations, wi-fi connection was good, tea/coffee during a day was prepared. Lunch and dinner were held at the Bel Poggio restaurant with delicious Italian cuisine which is recommended. So, our event was well organized. We would like to express our thanks to the owner of Villa Cardinale. Marina was very responsive and made all we have requested perfectly. Especially we would like to mention the great housekeeper Stefania who was extremely helpful and kind to the guests and took care of them. Splendid place to stay close to Rome!

Christmas holidays 2014

Definitely Villa il Cardinale is more than a dream to spend any kind of family holidays. We went for the first week of January, and will remember this week forever. The villa is just as describe, full of charming corners, light, and history. The rooms are very well decorated, the bathrooms very big and the beds extremely comfortable. The fireplaces were working perfectly, although the heating, despite of the cold weather, was more than enough. Wi-fi worked well and we found out every thing we needed just like at home. Marina and her team, Stefania and Francesco were very nice with us and provided all the facilities we needed. Francesco organized for us a great pizza night, and Stefania bought food from our shopping list for the firsts days and helped us tidy up everything daily. The villa is very close to Rome and the main airports; we rented a car and had no problems with our movements. The garden is also one of the strongest attractions of the house, big, very well maintained and full of special corners. It even had a ping-pong table, which gave us the opportunity to remember our youth. In a few words Rome wouldn't had been the same in another place. We would all repeat for sure and hope we'll do as soon as we can. Thanks for everything.

Highly Recommended

The moment I arrived I fell instantly under the spell of this magical place. It is one of the most beautiful houses imaginable, grand and yet cosy and cottage-y at the same time; decorated with impeccable taste and great attention to detail. And do you usually dine at a 16th century table or have an afternoon tea on a patio surrounded by 1st century walls? Pass a few National-Museum-class Roman pillars in the lounge as if it was nothing remarkable and consider mid-20th century hand painted tiles 'really new'? The villa is surrounded by gardens which make it completely private and give it a real countryside feel - and yet Central Rome is only 20 to 25 minutes drive away and, for those who are not keen on taxis, there is sufficient parking space for a number of cars. The nearest beaches are only 30 to 40 minutes drive away. The house is clean, well maintained and well equipped for anything one may need - including a good WiFi connection - and in addition restaurant Bel Poggio is just out of the gate across the road. I have to add, the food there is lovely. The owner is an amazing lady, most welcoming; and the staff was very attentive. What else can I say, thank you for having us in your wonderful house!

A beautiful old house, just outside Rome

Date of Stay
27 June 2014

The house is beautiful, situated in a lovely garden. The rooms are spacious, elegantly furnished, and very comfortable. Everything is well and thoughtfully arranged. It is quite easy to slip into central Rome by car, taking about 20 minutes, but I would recommend a taxi rather than driving as parking is difficult. It is a very good place to stay, both in which to relax and from which to explore Rome. We were there for a yoga retreat, my first one in fact. Others attending had much more experience. Before going, I was a bit worried that this would make the retreat a bit difficult, but for me at least it could not have worked out better. It was helpful to be able to watch the others, and I did not have the impression that my lack of knowledge of Yoga was spoiling things for them too much. Marina was able to slip in some instruction for me, without much interrupting what the others were doing. I found it enjoyable and learnt a lot. I would certainly recommend it. I should also say that the food was delicious and appropriate for what we were doing. I arrived feeling tired and stressed, and left a few days later not only rested and relaxed, but much more practiced at yoga.

Words can not describe this incredible villa ! Our group of 14 family members ranging from age 16 to 85 had more than enough space to enjoy each other's company but have privacy as well. The pictures do not do the home justice. The details and the furnishings are exquisite and the history is more than one can imagine. Marina (villa owner) is wonderful and a perfect hostess. We had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with her before she departed. Stefania prepared the home perfectly. Everything was perfectly arranged and in perfect order. The gardens were meticulously groomed with orange and plum trees mixed in with beautifully blooming surroundings making even the rainy days glorious. The ruins on the property and the other outdoor locations made for beautiful strolls and breathtaking family pictures that we will treasure for years to come. The train station was a short 5 minute drive away and from there a 30 minute train ride into Rome. We did have cab drivers bring us home on two occasions. The trains back to our station did not run as late as we had hoped and the cab was our other option. The cost was approx 30euro per cab from the center of Rome to the train station where our car was. One can also take the train into the main terminal and catch the high speed train and be in Florence in 1 1/2 hours. We were very glad we made a day trip there and it was rather easy to navigate with a little research prior to departure. I highly recommend the Pizzaiolo Francesco and his helper to come to the home one evening. This was one of our favorite nights. The pizza was better than any we had and the atmosphere was great. We had returned from a very rainy day at the Colosseum and Forum and Francesco had the kitchen fireplace on and the pizza coming form the brick oven. The wine was flowing and everyone enjoyed the evening. Our only regret is not finding the local restaurant at the top of the hill called Nashville sooner. On our last evening we wandered up the hill and what a fantastic place!!! The food was outstanding the atmosphere was perfect. The staff at Nashville was thrilled with our visit. By the time we left the restaurant we were all facebook friends, took pictures together and regretfully parted ways wishing we had more time at the Villa. This home is like nothing I have experienced and highly recommend it for large or small groups and look forward to returning some day again.

We had a group of 14 at the property, ranging in age from 15 to 83. The property was very spacious, and we never felt cramped. Pizza night was great, with a professional using the outdoor over the way it was meant to be used. My brother stayed in a separate cottage that was very nice. There were numerous outdoor seating areas around the property. The beds were very comfortable, and the room appointments were luxurious. Highly recommended. *****

Its very easy to get there by rental car from FCO and also very easy to go into central Rome by car, We are not fan of pizzas but the first night we hade the pizza man there and it was just amazing, sitting outside and they were serving you more than you can eat A MUST. The villa is romantic and fully equipped with what you need and more to, it’s super clean and the garden amazing. If you need any help Stefania is always helpful, and very nice to everyone, kisses and hugs to you. We can highly record this place for everyone, our No 1 place in Italy and we have seen many.

A spacious and charming villa in a great location.  *****

Having stayed at 6 villas in different parts of Italy, I would rank Il Cardinale as one of the best. The rooms are clean and spacious, the gardens are interesting and unique (with your own private set of Roman ruins). The photos on its website do not do justice to the villa, and it's proximity to Rome and the GRA makes it easy to get to all points of interest. Marina, the villa owner, and Stefania could not have been more gracious in making us feel at home and attending to our needs. I highly recommend that you have Frankie the Pizzaiolo make pizza for you at the villa -- not only was the pizza fantastic, but Frankie and his assistant are quite entertaining.

"An amazing Roman holiday in a beautiful villa!" *****

We took our entire family (children, grandchildren) to Rome and were fortunate enough to have found this amazing villa near Rome. We used the local train (only a 5 min ride from the villa) to visit all the historical sites daily. The home was set on beautifully landscaped grounds with terraces and dotted with orange trees. Just beautiful! The home itself was perfect for our group. There were 11 of us and the villa gave us more than enough space to spread out and not be in the least crowded. The villa was magnificent; from the large dining room which accommodated all of us for dinners to the many fireplaces throughout the villa. Furnishings were comfortable and well maintained. The home was clean and well equipped, complete with washing machine and dishwasher. We were met by the Owner and her staff and given a guided tour of the home before we settled in. In addition, the Owner arranged for a private dinner on our first night - a "pizza night" using the Villa's outdoor pizza oven. Our youngest grandchildren considered THAT the highlight of their trip. Our older grandchildren loved that there is internet in the villa. While we didn't need the services of the Owner's assistant, Stefania, she was only a phone call away should we have needed anything. We would lovingly recommend this Villa for anyone wishing to be close enough to all the historical attractions in Rome and wanting to be able to retire to a comfortable home at the end of a busy sightseeing day. Thank you Marina for opening your home to us. We are truly grateful for the experience your Villa provided us.

This is a rare gem, situated just off Via Salaria this beautiful and elegant Villa ticked all of our boxes for a romantic break but would work very well as a location for a wedding party or any special event or film shoot. We loved its combination of authenticity (with original Roman features) and spacious luxury. Its got lots of different types of spaces both indoors and outdoors so offers both privacy and social opportunities. It really is a fabulous surprise as the images can't really give you the full sense of what is available here. The housekeeper is really helpful and friendly as well - altogether this is incredibly charming, we didn't want to leave!! A car is useful but there is a great restaurant just across the road and a well stocked supermarket within 5 minutes drive. If you walk 5 minutes up the road you are in country side. 10 minute drive to the stadium or the Catacombs of Priscilla..we found the proximity to Saxa Rubra station very useful too. All this and great value too we would certainly go again..

We had the honour to stay at Villa Cardinale's two weeks ago for my boyfriend's birthday celebration. Together with all our friend (13 plus a baby in total) we spent there 4 days which were awesome. When I contacted the owner I soon understood that it wouldn't be just a normal villa with hotel/B&B style, but somewhere lively where you can actually feel the presence of the people who've lived in it, their warmth and love. Although the pictures give an idea of how majestic and beautiful it is, they don't give it the right justice as the villa is something difficult to describe as you need to feel the unique atmosphere and the unequalled vibes.
Both the owner and the governess are beautiful people, very friendly and helpful and I would like to thank them again. My friends and I have never spent a holiday in such a great place and will remember that forever.

I was in Rome for a conference last several days and Villa il Cardinale was the perfect place to stay. It’s just outside the main ring road and so far from the hustle and bustle of the city, and yet I was able to get to the centre of Rome in less than 30 minutes by car or by public transport.
The house itself is stunning - a historic cardinal’s villa set in extensive grounds beautiful gardens and complete with ancient Roman ruins. It has evidently been carefully restored recently and has a wonderful feel to it. There’s a combination of grandeur with high ceilings, fine furnishings, paintings and wall hangings, and yet a reassuringly homely feel with attention to detail throughout. For example, when we arrived, the beds had been made up and the towels laid out with sprigs of fresh lavender.
The bedrooms and bathrooms are all well-equipped, as are the kitchens, and the rooms are all spacious. There are plenty of power sockets and you can access the internet in most of the rooms and in parts of the garden. There is also a wonderful sense of light throughout the house, and the tall pines, palm trees and orange trees that surround the house mean that you can hardly believe that you are so close to the city centre.
This place is truly magical and perfect for a family or a group of friends with a few days to spend in this fantastic city.

We loved staying here and were very sad to leave. It's the best of both worlds - far enough outside of Rome to enjoy quiet, with beautiful terraces and gardens but close enough to get into town for everything - just a 15-20 minute drive into the center of Rome. The rooms are large, airy and so comfortable. Everything is beautifully maintained. The house expands or shrinks to one's needs - great for a big gathering of friends or family, with no one feeling crowded but equally wonderful for a couple who wish to rent the charming guest cottage (where we were). There are two wonderful places to sit and eat outside. On one terrace you can sit alongside the splendid remains of a Roman bath, while another terrace has elegant sofas and billowing curtains. There are two excellent working kitchens in the house and one in the cottage, so no shortage of cooking facilities. The rooms are colourful and elegant, all pretty. The beds, sheets very good quality. There's a wonderful restaurant literally at the bottom of the drive. Otherwise all of Rome is there for you. A supermarket is only about 5 minutes drive away, the local train station almost as close. The owner could not be more gracious or willing to accommodate. The caretaker is capable and always willing to help. I honestly cannot think of one thing that detracts from this wonderful place. It's like being in the country but with access to everything. I didn't want to leave. Wonderful.

Certainly one of the most impressive villas I have seen and been to. Each room and area is decorated to a very high standard thoughtfully. The spacious gardens outside are delightful to walk around, and lots of charming touches like fruit trees and flowers apart from historic remains in that garden. The rooms are all of bespoke decor and all tastefully done and very clean.

One can easily reach Rome with a car and there is a supermarket and some coffee/bar places very nearby. Even with its proximity to Rome it maintains a countryside feel.

This villa will be a special place for everyone visiting it and will be one of the most memorable places one can stay in for any holiday. Due to its uniqueness and charm it can certainly be worth a special journey just to live in the villa itself.
